Call for Applications: River Landscapes Workshop | 10-14 February 2025

Science Gallery Bengaluru is organising River Landscapes, a transdisciplinary workshop of fluvial landscapes and the story of the river Kaveri. We are inviting applications from students, artists, creative practitioners and early career researchers in the age group 18-30 to participate in the workshop and contribute to a glossary on river landscapes in the form of writing, graphic/art, photographs or other media.

Background
The rivers of the subcontinent have had a tremendous influence on the landscape, empires, cultures, religious and artistic practices. In contemporary times, rivers are treated as sites of extraction, control and disposal. The words, images and feelings we associate with rivers today serve to cement this relationship by confining them into the logics of the economy and technology. Our transdisciplinary project “River Landscapes: A New Glossary” intends to create a glossary to conceptualise our relationship with river landscapes, foreground their role as mediators of art, culture and social practices and acknowledge the rights of living beings that thrive and transform them.

The workshop, held in Science Gallery Bengaluru, aims to pay particular attention to the story of the river Kaveri. Not only does the Kaveri provide much of the city’s water supply, it has a profound influence on the ecological, political and socio-cultural landscape of the region. Through the workshop, participants will situate the historical and contemporary realities of Kaveri in the larger technocratic and socio-cultural imagination of river landscapes.

The last date to apply is 21 January 2025. Selected participants will be intimated on 25 January 2025.
